The subject. Defence rejected accusations of Trump that Berlin owes NATO and US

The German Defense Minister Ursula von der Laien today rejected the claim of the US president Donald Trump who said that Germany owes to NATO and the United States, "huge amounts" for defense.

"No to NATO debt account," he said in a statement von der Laien, which added that it is wrong to bind the Alliance goal defense spending of member countries amounting to 2% of their GDP by 2024, only with NATO.

"Defense spending also go on humanitarian missions of the UN, the European missions and our contribution to the war against IK" terrorism, said von der Laien.

He said everyone wanted to fairly share the burden and to do this it is necessary to have a "modern idea of security" that includes a modern NATO and a European defense union and investment in the United Nations.

The Trump wrote on Twitter yesterday; one day after his meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Washington; that Germany "has huge amounts of money to NATO and the United States should be paid more for the powerful, and very costly, defense offered in Germany."
