The president of the Serbian Parliament Maja Gojkovic announced today that the first round of presidential elections in Serbia will be held on April 2.
Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, a former ultranationalist turned into Europeans advocate of liberalism, is a candidate and favorite in this election, according to opinion polls published in recent weeks.
His party, the ruling right SNS, confirmed in mid-February that Vucic will be a candidate to succeed him Tomislav Nikolic, whose mandate expires on 31 May.
"I wish the citizens to elect the best candidate who will work in a serious and responsible manner with the government in order to ensure political and economic stability of the country," Gojkovic said that by launching these elections.
Aleksandar Vucic will rival a former partner, the far-right ultra-nationalist Vojislav Seselj, who was acquitted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (TPIY), which was on trial for crimes during the wars of the 1990s.
