Eur. Court: Member States are not obliged to issue entry permits for humanitarian reasons

The European Union member states do not need to issue entry permits to people at risk of torture or inhuman treatment, as stated today by the Supreme Court of the European Union, excluding a possible channel for refugees in the Union.

The ECJ decision is contrary to the Advocate General, who suggested last month that such passes shall be issued in the context of European legislation.

The court's decision in Case of a Syrian family from Aleppo who applied for a visa to stay with acquaintances in Belgium in October. The Belgian authorities refused visa approval, leading to litigation.
