Antonio Tajani (EPP) as the new President of the European Parliament


Antonio Tajani, the Italian candidate of the European People's Party, was elected tonight President of the European Parliament announced in Strasbourg outgoing president of the body, the German Martin Schulz.

The victory marks the strengthening of the power of the right in European institutions.

In the fourth and final round of voting by Tajani took 351 votes against 282 also Italian rival, the candidate of the center-left Gianni Pitelis, as confirmed by the Social Democrat Schulz addressed MEPs who applauded the winner.

The 63chronos Tajani, former European commissioner and an ally of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will succeed Schultz in a time of crisis for the EU, as Britain is expected to leave, while Russia and the US bring Europe faced with new challenges and threats.

During his tenure Schultz worked closely with the center-right European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker, but the president ended amid recriminations to end the center-right-center-right coalition with background strengthen Eurosceptic.

Ending this alliance might make it harder to adopted European legislation on various issues. While the Tajani victory gives the European right and the power to the three key institutions - the presidency of the European Council, the Presidency of the European Commission and the Presidency of the European Parliament.

The Tajani however promised MEPs that will be a "president for all of you."

He managed to win thanks to an alliance with the Liberals, whose leader Guy Verhofstadt wanted a front against the populists.
