Turkey: Investigations against 10,000 people suspected of terrorist action

The Turkish authorities are conducting investigations against 10,000 people suspected of "terrorist" activity or "insulting" government officials through social networking websites, announced today the Turkish Interior Ministry.

These studies are part of "the fight against terrorism, which continues with determination everywhere, including social networking sites" refers to the statement.

After the coup attempt in mid-July, the Turkish authorities declared a state of emergency and proceeded to liquidations on a large scale. Organizations defending human rights are concerned about these developments and blame Ankara for suppressing opposition.

More than 1,600 people accused of "propaganda or advocacy of terrorism" or even "insulting public officials" were detained last ten months.
