At least 33 dead in Siberia from consumption lotion as a substitute for alcohol


At least 33 residents of Irkutsk city died after consuming oil bath hoping that the Russian authorities would have the same effect as alcohol, they announced today.

In regions of Russia the use of alcohol substitutes or adulterated alcoholic drinks is very common as the last two years of economic recession has forced more people into extreme poverty. However, the number of victims of this last incident is unusually high.

The city authorities Irkutsk, a city of about 6,000 inhabitants located 4184 kilometers east of Moscow, said in a statement that it arrested two suspects for the distribution of oil for the bath.

The product brought label warning about the risk of swallowing, but authorities said the victims of the ignored and the like have been consumed alcohol. The same source added that the oil bath containing methyl alcohol.

It is unclear whether the sellers of the product promoted in the market as a cheaper substitute for alcoholic beverages such as vodka.
"Fifty-four people were evacuated to medical centers, of which 33 came," says the statement of the authorities investigating the incident.

"The investigators and the police carry out checks in markets where the product was purchased for the first time. More than 100 outlets have been identified."

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a government meeting that wants to consider prohibiting the sale of products that can cause so much death and added that the penal code of the country amended to tighten the punishment for those caught selling such products.
