Obama declares pessimistic about the prospects of Syria

The United States President Barack Obama said yesterday that the chaos in Syria will continue "for some time" and that the Russian and Iranian support of air attacks of the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad had encouraged Assad to step up the repression of the rebels.

"I'm not optimistic about the short-term prospects of Syria," Obama said at a press conference in Lima, at the end of a top board with leaders of the countries of the Pacific region.

"Since Russia and Iran took the decision to support Assad and one by air inhuman run (support) substantially peace of Aleppo regardless of how many civilians were killed, children killed or injured, schools and hospitals destroyed, then It proved very difficult to find a way that can even an educated and committed moderate opposition to stand for long periods, "he said.

Obama, who was elected by the Democratic Party and will succeed him on 20 January, Donald Trump, candidate of the Republican Party, said he told Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Lima that particularly worried the carnage in Syria and that the ceasefire was needed.

"At this stage, we need a change in the way they see them on all sides, so that we can termatisoume the situation over there," Obama said, adding, "There is no doubt that there will continue to extremist forces within and around Syria it will continue to exist in chaos for some time to come. "

With the Obama administration, the military assistance program that oversees the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has trained and deliver weapons to moderate rebels in coordination with countries including Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan.

Newly elected Trump has indicated its opposition to US support of the rebels, saying he wants to focus on the fight against the Islamic State. He also said that it can still work against jihadist organization with Russia, the strongest ally of Assad, which bombards rebels for a year in western Syria.

Obama's trip to Peru is the last stop on the international farewell trip that included Greece and Germany and was held under the shadow of question marks concerning the election of Trump as president.

Obama said that the issue of US involvement in Syria tormented him for five years.

He said he had concluded that the United States had no legal basis for the military involvement of the US in Syria and that to intervene would be "strategic mistake", given the effort to stabilize Afghanistan and Iraq and the need to combat the Islamic State.
