Earthquake measuring 7.8 degrees hit just after midnight Sunday (local time) on the central New Zealand,

announced the US Geological USGS observatory, causing extensive damage and tsunami.

The Geonet, the seismological service of New Zealand, revised side upwards the size of the earthquake to 7.5 points from 6.6 that was announced earlier.

The New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Situations Management warned that risk damaging waves to hit the entire east coast and urged residents to flee to higher ground.

Waves of up to two meters can make their appearance in up to two hours, explained the ministry.

Anna Kaiser, seismologist of GNS Science, said that tsunami height of one meter was recorded in the district of North Canterbury on the South Island.

The USGS reported that the earthquake epicenter was located 91 km. North-northeast of Christchurch, the largest city of New Zealand's South Island.

An earthquake of 6.3 degrees that have occurred there in February 2011 claimed the lives of 185 people and had caused extensive damage.

The vibration was felt in much of New Zealand. They reported some injuries, but so far there are no reports of deaths.

"The whole house shook like a snake and some things were broken, the power was cut," he told Radio New Zealand from the residence of the pads near the northern end of the South Island, a woman said she called Elizabeth.

Chris Hill firefighter in Tseviot, a coastal town near the epicenter of the earthquake, said that officers go door to door and evacuate residents.

"We all seem all right here," he told the radio station RNZ. "There are a lot of debris in homes, but at this stage does not seem to happen very bad."

Residents in Wellington said that glass broke and fell from buildings on the street while hotels and apartment complexes were evacuated.

Richard Maclean, spokesman for the city council of Wellington, said residents are removed from the southern coastal suburbs of the city because of the threat of a tsunami and no information on structural damage to several buildings.

"We have information broken aqueducts and too many objects have fallen desks and shelves," he told RNZ.

Roads in the South Island were closed and damage to power grids and telephone communications have been reported.
