Overwhelming victory of the ruling party in elections in Georgia
The ruling pro-Western Georgian Dream party is the winner of yesterday's second round of parliamentary elections, according to official results announced today and which the opposition contests. The central electoral commission declared winner of the elections the Georgian Dream, which prevailed in 48 of the 50 constituencies where voting took place in the second round, respectively securing 48 of the 50 seats. Independent candidates took two seats.
In the first round of 8 October, the ruling party had secured 48.68% of the votes, against 27.11 for the opposition United National Movement.
For the first time in the history of this former Soviet republic, the small pro-Russian party Alliance of Patriots exceeded the 5% threshold guaranteeing parliamentary representation.
Upon completion of the second round, the Georgian Dream holds 115 seats, the United National Movement 27, the Alliance of Patriots and six independent candidates 2. This comfortable parliamentary majority will allow the ruling party to form a government and adopt constitutional amendments .
