Moldova: opened polling stations for presidential elections
Moldovans began voting today in the first of the 1997 election president conducted by universal suffrage, a showdown contrasting supporters of rapprochement with Russia with supporters of the country's integration in the European Union.
Polling stations opened at 07:00 (local time and GMT) for these elections, which are expected to be neck and neck in this country of 3.5 million inhabitants, that is shocked by a deep political crisis after discovery last year of a gigantic bank fraud.
Nine candidates participate in this match. It is the first time since 1997 that the head of state is elected by universal suffrage, after the decision taken in March by the Constitutional Court.
In elections juxtaposed substantially the pro-European forces in government and the pro-Russian opposition, the head of which, the leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodo considered favorites to win the first round.
