Chancellor Merkel does not see on the horizon the end of EU sanctions on Russia
Russian naval and ground forces trained in Crimea in logistical matters, today reported the Russian RIA news agency quoted Deputy Defense Minister Gen. Dmitry Bulgakov.
Russian support units operating in Crimea logistical and material support exercises, he said.
At the same time, referring to the sanctions imposed by the EU in Russia, Chancellor Angela Germany Merkel stressed in an interview published today in RedaktionsNetzwerksDeutschland (RND) that Russia caused a major crisis with the annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.
"Europe should react against this violation of the basic principles," Merkel noted in her interview.
The German chancellor added that along with French President Francois Hollande working with "all their forces" to urge Russia and Ukraine to implement the Minsk agreement for a ceasefire despite all the difficulties.
"This is and remains the basis for the future of sanctions," Merkel chancellor says.
The EU agreed in June to extend until the end of January next year the sanctions imposed on Russia in the energy, economic and defense on the conflict in Ukraine.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and other Social Democrats, however, have adopted a more conciliatory tone, saying the EU should gradually abolish the sanctions imposed on Russia if no progress in the peace process.
