Russia wants to start a dialogue with NATO to agree on "confidence building measures", says Putin


Russian President Vladimir Putin said today that Moscow will try to start a dialogue with NATO on CBMs and avoid conflict, after the summit of the North Atlantic Alliance to be held next week in Warsaw.

After his meeting with President of Finland Saul Niinisto, Putin said the NATO-Russia Council will be convened after the NATO summit and that the two sides will discuss the measures to avoid a collision in the Baltic Sea region.

The Niinisto his part noted that military aircraft flying in the Baltic region should not close their transponders, devices have and which permit their identification. "We all know the risk with these flights and I suggest you agree that the transponders will be used on all flights in the Baltic Sea," he said.

Russia argues that in recent months has identified many US aircraft approaching its borders but have closed their transponders.

Referring to the enlargement of NATO, the President Putin hinted that Russia would have moved its troops closer to the border if Finland decided to join the North Atlantic Alliance. In such a case, as explained, the armed forces of Finland will no longer formed part of the Western military alliance and were "on the border of the Russian Federation".
