Hate crimes have increased in the country after Brexit
The number of hate crimes reported in the British police before and after the referendum in favor of withdrawal from the EU grew by 42% compared with the same period last year, announced today the police chiefs.
There were 3076 incidents that were reported to police forces throughout the country during the two weeks after the June 16, which means that 915 offenses were recorded more than last year.
Britons voted on June 23 to withdraw from the EU, since a deeply divisive campaign in which the central theme was immigration and Muslims and Eastern Europeans complained that they were targets.
"We now have clear evidence of an increase in hate crime reports nationwide and we find that in recent weeks there has been a sharp increase," said Mark Hamilton, representative of the Council of Heads of Police on cases of hate crimes.
"This is unacceptable and undermines diversity and tolerance should instead be defended."
The police said that most hate crimes occurred on June 25 when 289 incidents were reported in the whole United Kingdom, but has since been reduced.
The most common offenses were harassment, assault and other forms of violence such as verbal abuse, spitting or pushing.
