Thirteen Nobel laureates warn that Brexit would be disastrous for research in the country
Thirteen British Nobel laureates warned today that a withdrawal of the UK from the European Union would jeopardize scientific research in the country.
In a letter to the newspaper The Daily Telegraph, scientists estimate that "the prospect of the loss of funding from the European Union constitutes a significant risk to scientific research" in Britain.
"The science nourishes our wellbeing, the health system, our ability to innovate and our economic development" highlight scientists, among them physicist Peter Higgs (awarded the Nobel Prize in 2013) and the biochemist Paul Ners (prize Nobel 2001).
"The assurances of those who are in favor of Brexit that the Finance Ministry will cover the gap (pp funding) is naive," continue, noting that the proportion of UK GDP set aside for research is already "well below the average of the EU countries and the OECD ".
A new poll by the institute ORB conducted for the online newspaper The Independent shows that 55% of Britons favor of Brexit and only 45% would vote in favor of the country's EU residence.
