New design and pan-European referendum requested by the Minister. French Economy
The European Union needs a new roadmap should be developed in consultation with voters and then put to a referendum, the French Economy Minister Emmanuel Makris said today and his comments likely to cause further tension in the ruling Socialist Party.
The lengthy statement on the pan-European referendum goes beyond the comments made by President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Vals, who said both that the EU must "reinvent" itself after the vote by the British to withdraw from the Union but made no reference to a referendum.
"First we will build this new project with European nations and then we will submit this new roadmap, this new plan in a referendum," he said before a discussion on the impact of the British referendum.
Long added that there should be consultation with voters through a series of discussions which he called "democratic assemblies."
"It must be in the right context," the minister added.
