Message EU unity following the outcome of the British referendum sends joint statement of the quartet of EU presidents, Donald Tusk, the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, and the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, shortly after meeting them in the European Commission headquarters in Brussels.

"In a free and democratic process, the British people expressed the desire to withdraw from the EU. We are sorry about this decision, but we respect it," said the quartet statement, which was read by Jean-Claude Juncker, during a short press conference.

Continuing the statement reads as follows:

"This is an unprecedented situation but we are united, we remain strong and will defend the principles of the EU to promote peace and prosperity of its peoples. The compound with the 27 Member States will continue, it is the framework of our common political future. We are bound by history, geography and common interests and will continue to work on; this base. Together we will face the challenges of economic growth, improving welfare and ensuring a safe environment for our citizens.

We expect the UK Government to make effective the decision of the British people, however painful and it is this process. Any delay will prolong unnecessarily the uncertainty. Article 50 of the EU Treaty refers to the procedures to be followed if a Member State decides to withdraw from the EU. We are ready to start negotiations smoothly with the United Kingdom, on the terms and conditions of withdrawal from EU. to complete the process the UK remains the EU member with all rights and obligations. Union law still applies in full to the United Kingdom until it is no longer member of the EU.

The setting for the United Kingdom to the EU, the February agreement will not apply to lapse. There will be no renegotiation. We hope the UK to remain a close partner of the EU in the future and expect to submit proposals in this direction. In the end any agreement with the United Kingdom, as a third country should express the interests of both sides and to a balance of rights and obligations. "
