Merkel - Hollande afraid of new large wave of refugees from Libya
H European Union should likely proceed to an agreement with Libya, corresponding it with Turkey, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande, as there is a clear threat that the North African country will become a second immigrant gateway to Europe.
"If we can do about Libya that we did with Turkey, as with our own borders: We have much to do," Merkel said after the meeting he had with Hollande in Metz, France.
Many immigrants could move to Malta, Italy, tens of thousands of people, "said Hollande.
"Europe's response should be to address the causes at their root," Merkel said, adding: "Our response should be that we do something for the peace process, for example, do the Foreign Ministers in Syria."
Merkel and Hollande said that Europe must fully restore movement without passports so-called Schengen zone.
