More than 5,000,000 citizens helped us somehow refugees the previous period, as shown by research of non-profit research organization "diaNEOsis" made public today.
As noted in the conclusions of the investigation "if true, this is perhaps one of the greatest demonstrations of solidarity in the modern history of the Greek state."
Since the beginning of 2015, almost one million people have passed through the coast of Turkey in one of the Greek islands, trying to reach one of the rich countries of northern Europe. This is the biggest massive population displacement in recent history, and one of the major humanitarian crises which Europe has faced war. And happens to pass by the coastline of Greece.
How are facing this unprecedented crisis Greek citizens? What image are the problem, its size and its causes? The main conclusions from the replies to 21 questions of the survey can be summarized as follows:
1. Greek citizens generally underestimate the size of refugee flows, while their knowledge of specific aspects of the problem appear limited. Only one in five Greeks seems to have an accurate picture of the size of the refugee problem.
2. The Greeks are disappointed by the attitude of the European Union, and is not satisfied either by the attitude of the Greek government to the problem. In contrast, strongly endorse the attitude of the inhabitants of the islands that receive refugees, the activities of NGOs, but also the activity of the state bodies mainly the port.
3. The citizens expressed at significant levels feelings and opinions of sympathy and solidarity towards refugees, which are confirmed in a number of different research questions.
