Italy: Police raid cocaine factory

Italian police today conducted a raid on a cocaine manufacturing laboratory, in a town on the slopes of Vesuvius, just south of Naples and arrested five persons including two known members of the local mafia.

Police also arrested three Colombians held which found seven kilos of cocaine paste and 20 liters of a liquid-based cocaine, whose value could reach € 3 million after appropriate treatment.

Although the Italian mafia is known to be one of the biggest cocaine importers in Europe, the drugs usually arrive from South America ready for use.

In the laboratory, which had been set up in the kitchen of an apartment, traders produced cocaine from a material resembling plastic.

A police officer said that this shows how the methods used to "camouflaged" drugs have evolved.

"Probably the Colombians came to Italy to explain the method of production, because apparently only those who made the plastic know how to export cocaine from it," explained Colonel Giuseppe Fourtsiniti to agency Reuters.

Police did not give further details on how the drugs were transported in Italy or how the lab was located, noting only that investigations are continuing.
