Alexei Pouskof: Turkey is preparing for terrestrial intervention in Syria
Fears that Turkey is preparing to land intervention in Syria, expressed the president of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Duma, Alexei Pouskof, who is on an official visit to Athens.
"The Russian Defense Ministry is felt that Turkey prepares for possible ground war," said Mr. Pouskof. "There are already data from satellites for military build-up in Turkey's border with Syria," added the Russian official, even describing "unpredictable" Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Referring however to the possibility of joint intervention of Turkish and Saudi Arabian troops, the Russian official claimed that "Saudi Arabia can is ready for such a possibility, but does not have the necessary forces to realize it."
Asked about NATO patrols in the Aegean to address the immigration crisis, Mr. Pouskof noted that Greece agreed to the NATO operation in the Aegean in order to strengthen control of refugee flows. "One reason why NATO undertook this business in the Aegean is because you wanted to show that not only target the alliance Russian threat. So I decided to take this business in the Aegean "he said.
The Russian official expressed the view that "NATO should stay away from the Syrian crisis" and stressed that at present shows that it will not engage. "There is a desire to expand this business. We see NATO wants to be involved in the Syrian interior. This will complicate even more the general situation. Rather, NATO is not ready for this. This would be very dangerous, because where there was involvement of NATO military presence there for years, as in Afghanistan ... It was NATO's good to be away from military involvement in the crisis in Syria, "added features.
The Alexei Pouskof however emphasized that "Turkey, a NATO member country, breaking the Russian fighter aircraft made it difficult too the situation: on the one NATO had to justify Turkey's stance, but then again stirred up the risk of the Alliance's engagement the conflict in Syria. "
The chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Duma was received today by the President of the House Nikos Voutsis, the State Minister Nikos Pappas and Defence Minister Panos Burnt. He also met with the Chairman of the Permanent Defence and Foreign Affairs, K. Douzinas and tomorrow will meet with the competent Head of Sector ND, Dora Bakoyannis.
At the heart of his contacts in Athens were issues of bilateral interest and international politics, with emphasis on the situation in Syria, Ukraine and refugee. "The purpose of my visit was to activate my interparliamentary dialogue and contacts realized that Greece is among those EU countries that are in favor of long-term and sincere cooperation with Russia. Are among the countries that understand that the Cold War confrontation is harmful to both sides, "he said. It said Mr. Pouskof addressing the European leadership, "the sanctions policy has to stop and restore the interparliamentary contacts between EU member states and Russia."
