OPCW: they destroyed all chemical weapons by the Syrian regime
All chemical weapons declared by Syria in 2013 have now been destroyed, today announced the organization that was responsible for oversight of this process, two years after they started their dispatch outside Syrian territory.
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) However expresses grave concern over reports of the use of mustard gas, sarin and chlorine in the bloody civil war in Syria.
The declared chemical arsenal "was destroyed at the rate of 100%," said the spokesman of the OPCW Malik Min. "This disaster put an end to an important chapter concerning the termination of chemical weapons production program in Syria," also said in a statement the Director General of the Agency, Ahmed Izimtzi.
"We continue our work to respond to the continued use of chemical weapons in this country," he added. Last 75 hydrogen fluoride bottles were destroyed in a factory in the US Texas.
The process was delayed to complete as it was necessary to find a "technical solution for handling bottles in deteriorating and dangerous conditions," noted OPCW. In light of international agreements chemical weapons should have been destroyed up until June 2014.
After an attack with chemical Eastern Gouta, which killed hundreds of people in August 2013, the Syrian government agreed to declare the entire chemical arsenal and to deliver those weapons to be destroyed under the supervision of the OPCW.
