France wants 'guarantees' for the departure of President Assad
France yesterday called for the UN to be "guarantees" for the withdrawal of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from power, whereas it is imperative "reasons for not only moral but also effectiveness" of the peace process.
"How anyone would be able to unite a people that contributed largely be slaughtered?" Wondered the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, shortly after the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution which endorses an ambitious peace plan for Syria.
"While still holding the governance of the Bashar al-Assad, a true and lasting reconciliation between the population and the Syrian state seems elusive," added the head of French diplomacy. The Fabius called to start an "effective (political) transition means the delivery to a transitional government of all executive powers, particularly control over the army and the mechanism of security services, as envisaged by the Communication of Geneva."
