China: sentenced 14 former officials for a gas pipeline explosion in 2013
China sentenced 14 former officials of state energy company Sinopec and the local government to imprisonment reaches up to five years for a large explosion on an oil pipeline in 2013, reported today the official news agency New China. The explosion in Shandong province of eastern China resulted in 63 people killed and 156 injured. It caused losses of 751.7 million yuan (US $ 117.53 million), said the agency.
The officials of Sinopec sentenced for violation of safety regulations and government officials for dereliction of duty in countering the effects of the explosion. The eruption was one of the largest that have damaged infrastructure in China, raising questions about security levels in the second largest economy in the world. In August, explosions in warehouses of the port resulted in the deaths of more than 160 people in the southeastern city of Tianjin.
The 2013 explosion at oil pipeline occurred in Ntongkgingk-Chouangkntao II pipeline belonging to Sinopec. The government had said at that time that caused by erosion, irregular work practices and a complex network of underground pipelines
