The 15 members of the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a decision to impose new severe sanctions against North Korea, with the country implementing $ 1 billion a year.
The new package of sanctions, in the iron, coal and fisheries sectors, is the first to be imposed on Pyongyang at the initiative of the US since the assumption of the presidency by Donald Trump. It is indicative of a change in China's attitude towards North Korea, which is the mainstay.
Washington will continue to take cautious defense measures
The United States "takes and will continue to take careful defensive measures to protect ourselves and our allies" from the danger posed by North Korea, US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nick Haley, said today after the vote in the UN Security Council .
"The threat of North Korea is becoming increasingly dangerous," Haile told Security Council members following the imposition of a new set of sanctions against Pyongyang. "Further measures are needed".
China's ambassador to the UN called on North Korea to stop the actions that threaten to strain tensions and called for the US missile defense system to be stopped in South Korea, demanding the decommissioning of the equipment.
