France: Lament for 43 deaths in the rolling of the Gironde
A terrible head-on collision in a dangerous turn of a tourist bus and a truck, the bloodiest rolling in France over the last 33 years, killed at least 43 people and wounding four heavy yesterday near Limpourn Gironde region of the county, east of Bordeaux. The victims, mostly elderly people and a child, were burned alive.
The tragedy shocked France and Europe, with solidarity messages to inundate the country and condolence telegrams arriving at the Elysee Palace.
Yesterday evening, the report was not accurate 14 hours after the tragedy in southwest France. It is the most deadly rolling after the one in 1982 where 53 people were killed in Beaune, in the Golden Beach area on the east country.
"There may be people who were registered in the list but not aboard the vehicle, and vice versa. There was a list of the bus which has not been found yet," said the prosecutor Limpourn Christophe Ogker, who directs research.
"That is why I announced 41 or 42 victims," he added, explaining that the bus "was taking passengers from various places communities", as shown by "last station in Petit Palais", from where the bus departed at around 7.00 in the morning a day trip to the Pyrénées Atlantiques.
The truck driver, aged about 30 years, is among the dead, like the three-year son. The driver was "experienced", was the son of the director of a transport company based in Saint-Germain-Klerfegi in Orne area. He had gone to deliver timber and returned.
